New vs Used Shipping Containers
New containers cost a little over twice as much as used ones. Here's what the difference buys and when it's worth paying.
What the terms mean
- New (one-trip): made a single voyage carrying cargo before being sold, so it is close to factory condition with minimal rust, dents or wear.
- Used, cargo-worthy: structurally sound for shipping cargo, with normal wear.
- Used, wind-and-water-tight: keeps wind and water out and suits storage, and may show more wear.
The price difference
| Size | Used from | New from |
|---|---|---|
| 20ft Standard | AED 4,000 | AED 8,500 |
| 40ft Standard | AED 7,000 | On request |
| 40ft High Cube | AED 7,500 | AED 14,500 |
A new 20ft costs AED 4,500 more than a used one. A new High Cube costs AED 7,000 more.
When to buy new
- A storage conversion, site office or anything customer-facing.
- Long-term use where appearance and longevity matter.
When used is enough
- Rough site storage, where a used cargo-worthy unit is more cost-effective.
- Short projects and shipping work where cosmetics don't matter.
